Defensive Driving with A1 Driving School

DEFENSIVE DRIVING IS BACK AT HIGHLAND PARK COMMUNITY HOUSE

Streettalk Defensive Driving Course Dates, Times & Locations | A1 Driving School

Street Talk is an NZTA approved Defensive Driving Course that reduces the restricted licence period by 6 months for drivers under 25 (or 3 months if you are over 25).
The course teaches you how to recognise hazards on the road and how to avoid dangerous situations that lead to accidents.
It is an intensive and interactive course comprising of 4 x two-hour classroom sessions followed by a one-hour practical on-road session. The practical on-road session is completed in your own vehicle.

Our qualified instructor for this course is Rustom Dubash, further info on Rustom can be found on the A1 Driving School website.

•Raising awareness of your own perception of yourself as a safe driver
•Recognising links between personal well being and safe driving.

Session two – Risk and reality (2 hours)
•Distinguishing between deliberate and unintentional risk-taking
•Describing how human risk factors affect a driver’s perception of and response to risk
•Establishing realistic views of risks and consequences for novice drivers
•Increasing awareness of personal risk-taking.

Session three – Managing change (2 hours)
•Practising skills to become an in-control driver with a safe driving record
•Recognising the challenges of making changes to driving responses and habits
•Reframing mistakes as learning opportunities.

Session four – Hazard Training Guide (2 hours)
•Preparing for the practical on road session
•Exploring the concepts of “Hazard Perception” and “Getting the Big Picture”
•Developing strategies to address these issues.

Session five – Practical on-road session (1 hour to be completed within 60 days of session 4)
• Practising the driving and hazard perception skills required to pass the Full Licence Test
Students must attend all sessions in the above order and cannot continue on the same course if they miss a session.
You will be provided with a logbook with course content and assignments.

On completion of all assignments and the practical drive, you will receive a certificate, which enables you to sit your full licence test after 12 months instead of 18 months if you are under 25, or after 3 months instead of 6 months if you are over 25.

The course is best suited for students on a restricted driver licence. If you are on your learner licence you may be able to complete the course but you will need access to a supervisor to do the practical assignments. You will also need to have a minimum of 30 hours driving experience before starting the course.
